Agenda Item 1: British Sikhs and the establishment

Aim
To seek fair representation of British Sikhs in the establishment at local and national levels including local and central government and in Parliament and further to ensure fair recruitment and employment policies and practices in the public and private sector services e.g. local and central government services, the Police and the Armed Forces.

Objectives
To encourage British Sikhs, particularly practising Sikhs, to actively participate in British politics at national and local levels with a view to securing a greater Sikh representation of MPs, MEPs, Lords and councillors.

To encourage Government to secure effective participation and representation by British Sikhs in the various public service sectors and decision making bodies at local and national levels.

To work with the Government to provide British Sikhs greater opportunities for employment in public services at local and national level and to promote the right recruitment, selection and, where relevant, employment policies and procedures to ensure that there is no prejudicial treatment against Sikhs ensuring that the Sikh identity is fully accepted and respected.

To advise the Government to ensure Sikhs do not continue to suffer institutional racism by major employers in the public and private sector e.g. British Energy.
