Number of UK MPs supporting motions on 1984 approaching 150

As MPs left for the Christmas break the number of MPs supporting Motions on 1984 during 2004 increased to 144. The Motions raise concerns about the genocide of Sikhs in June 1984, the November 1984 pogroms against tens of thousands of innocent Sikhs and abuse of Sikh human rights by the Indian authorities over the last 20 years.

The 144 different MPs comprise both backbench Labour MPs and opposition MPs. The 1984 motions have been signed by 71 Labour MPs, 46 Conservative MPs, 22 Liberal Democrat MPs, 2 Ulster Unionist Party MPs, 1 Scottish National Party MP, 1 Plaid Cymru MP and 1 Independent Conservative MP. In addition, the Sikh Federation (UK) who pledged to raise motions relating to 1984 has received letters and messages of support from over 40 members of the Labour Government, including Cabinet Ministers, Junior Ministers and Parliamentary Private Secretaries that are unable to sign EDMs due to Parliamentary protocol.
