UK MPs observe Sikh Remembrance Day

On Thursday 11 November, UK Sikhs observed Sikh Remembrance Day at the Houses of Parliament. This was to remember the victims of the massacres organised by the Indian Government upon the death of the Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in November 1984.

Up to 20,000 Sikhs lost their lives in Delhi and other major cities. Thousands of others were raped, assaulted and had their homes and businesses burnt down. Only 6 people have ever been brought to trial. Two of the chief suspects have recently been made government ministers. Justice has not been done.

Rob Marris MP, and around forty other MPs of all three of the main political parties, took part in the lobby and led a minute’s silence for the victims.

A 5-minute clip from the Canadian produced documentary "Storming the Temple" on the events of that terrible month in 1984 was shown and left many in tears and "turned the heads" of the UK MPs present. This was followed by a short speech from a young woman from Leicester - one of the many youngsters belonging to Young Sikhs that have shown enormous interest in the events of 1984, in particular in the last six months or so. The session ended with a reading of a heart wrenching poem by a Sikh boy from Derby about his feelings upon learning about the injustices which had been committed just a few years before he was born.

The meeting ended on a positive note with MPs renewing their commitment to press for justice for the victims with help from their constituents. The Sikh Remembrance Day was organised by the Sikh Federation (UK), the first and only political party in the UK.
