Appeal
make the Sikh voice heard with UK Elections approaching
| The
Sikh Federation (UK) is publishing the Memorandum
of Understanding below that Gurdwaras and Sikhs
throughout the UK may wish to use in the coming
weeks and months when their sitting MP makes contact
or wishes to visit the Gurdwara and/or meets with
the local Sikh community
The Federation has also prepared a similar Memorandum
for Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs).
The Memorandum has been designed in a tick box
format allowing sitting MPs or PPCs flexibility
in terms of the issues they wish to support and
based on past experiences with the MP/PPCs. Sikh
representatives signing the Memorandum on behalf
of the community are encouraged to invite the
local media to witness the "signing"
ceremonies to ensure public pressure can be exerted
on MPs at the appropriate time.
Gurdwara representatives have a special role in
this process and are encouraged to take an active
role in arranging meetings with MPs and PPCs and
ensuring Sikh issues and concerns are given a
much higher priority.
Sitting MPs should be asked to explain their actions
and specify the support they have provided to
the Sikh community in the last 4 years. Sikhs
may wish to use the 8-point Sikh Agenda for the
UK Government published in September 2001 after
the last General Election as a guide.
